Every day, millions of Nevadans rely on the energy grid to power our modern way of life. Thanks to a network of transmission lines that carry energy from where it’s generated to where it’s used, we’re able to heat and cool our homes, keep the lights on in our schools and businesses, and even charge our vehicles. We rarely think twice about it — until the power goes out. The problem is most of America’s transmission lines were built in the 1950s and 1960s, and were only intended to have a 50-year lifespan. We’re way overdue for an upgrade.
Improving Nevada’s existing transmission infrastructure, building new lines, and pursuing a regional approach to transmission planning and coordination will ensure we can all enjoy reliable energy, while also bringing thousands of new living-wage jobs to the state, lowering electricity costs, and accelerating the clean energy transition.

By some estimates, the U.S. needs to build as many as 91,000 miles of new transmission lines in the next 13 years — which means new high-paying jobs across the country. Here in Nevada, investments in clean energy and transmission could diversify our economy and create as many as 24,280 new good-paying jobs in the next 10 years.

Electricity savings for homes and businesses
Working with neighboring states to build more robust transmission is the key to unlocking cheaper, cleaner energy. In a 100%-renewable power system, taking a regional approach to expanding transmission infrastructure rather than a state-by-state approach could cut the cost of electricity by as much as 46%. That means more money in the pockets of Nevada’s families and small businesses.

Keeping the power on when extreme temperatures strike
As Nevada continues to experience summer heat that breaks records year after year, a reliable energy grid will be a critical lifeline to help millions stay cool. Today, we have access to modern transmission technologies that are far more efficient than what we had in the 1960s. With a robust, 21st-century transmission system, grid operators can better coordinate resources and send power where it’s needed most to avoid the risk of blackouts when temperatures soar.

Transmission is the missing link to our 100% clean energy goals
Nevada has committed to achieving 100% clean energy by 2050, but we can’t get there without more and improved transmission. Already, the U.S. has enough clean energy resources under development to meet 80% of the nation’s total demand — we just need the transmission infrastructure to transport all that clean energy from the places where it’s generated to the places where we live, work, and play. Transmission is the key to a clean energy future.
